graeme wright The revived Big Big Train shows that you can't keep a good band down for long with a fairly easy listening, non confrontational selection of songs both traditionally long and catchingly short. if at times the acoustic guitars and sharp keyboard breaks are reminiscent of early Genesis then this is fully intended and respectful to the likes of Messrs Rutherford, Banks and Phillips. Vocal harmonies are, as expected, a delight to the ear and the whole is a big step forward from Welcome To The Planet

digger60 OK firsrtly the musicianship is great, but I find 3 things missing from BBTs latest work.
BBT were always a great reflection of england and its history in songwriting and lyrics and i find that missing. Also earlier works featured british brass bank sound at the forefront but here only in the background and finally I feel dave gregory gave the band a unique sound thats missing. So a 3/5 for me

Eddie Blix A progressive masterpiece and in my opinion on of the best, if not the best BBT album. Early, but serious contender for album of the year 2024! Favorite track: Beneath The Masts.

The award-winning progressive rock band BIG BIG TRAIN release their 15th studio album via InsideOut Music on March 1, 2024, marking the first full release with new frontman Alberto Bravin (ex-PFM). The anxiously-awaited unveiling of ‘The Likes Of Us’ follows BIG BIG TRAIN’s massively successful recent European tour, which saw them perform 17 concerts across nine countries, concluding with two triumphant appearances at London’s Cadogan Hall. The album is a stunning piece of work that retains all the elements that make the band so special, including absorbing and memorable arrangements and first-rate musicianship.

Definitions aside, BIG BIG TRAIN are a big fish in their chosen pond. Back in 2021, the group’s album ‘Common Ground’ returned prog rock to the UK national Top 40 chart. “First and foremost Big Big Train are a rock band, but we are absolutely a prog band, too,” bassist/co-founder Gregory Spawton declares. “We are very conscious of the traditions that we follow; we have never dissed them and we never will. The fact that we put classic-sounding prog back into the charts is absolutely fantastic.”

On the group’s recent tour, two selections from ‘The Likes Of Us’ – ‘Oblivion’ and ‘Love Is The Light’ – were introduced to an ecstatic audience response. During a tidal wave of rebirth and celebration, Bravin was accepted as one of the family. Indeed, the band’s ever-evolving chemistry has delivered mouth-watering results. “We’ve got a great mix of people that want to be here and go the extra mile to do something very special,” drummer Nick D’Virgilio comments. “There’s a big world of talented musicians out there, and luckily some of them want to hang out with us.”

The album takes off nicely with David Longdon's "The Strangest Times", but then gets into immediate free fall and deeply underwater for the next few tracks, quite unexpectedly. Fortunately, it recovers with Nick D'Virgilio's "Apollo" (hey, this guy CAN write good music, although he hides this ability most of the time) and the remaining three tracks, one of which is another Longdon masterpiece. What can I say about Big Big Train that I haven’t said before? This album took a little while to grow on me but by the time I saw it live I was in love with its humongous, over-egged pomposity! They do it all with such passion, excitement and amazing musicianship. Essential. Crinklechips

The string ensemble is a great addition, especially on Brooklands. Now you'll have to sacrifice to the prog tradition and have a concert with a symphonic orchestra. And I'll have to fly to London to see it! Can't wait to see you in NJ! annapolis-sunrise
