They are regarded by many as one of the leading, if not THE leading, progressive rock outfit of the new millennium. THE FLOWER KINGS are led by prog rock icon, guitarist, vocalist, composer, producer Roine Stolt into a world of unlimited musical fantasy and flair. Playing its first ever live date in August 1994 as a result of the interest in Stolt's solo album "The Flower King", the band quickly became somewhat of a phenomenon in the progressive rock community for everyone that once loved bands like Pink Floyd, Genesis, Zappa, UK, Utopia, Yes, ELP, King Crimson or Focus.

However, THE FLOWER KINGS never were simple copycats that merely tried to relive the glorious 70's, the band rather fused their sound with a remarkable knowledge of their past but still containing elements of contemporary music and of all music history, always looking into the future, always ready to point out new directions and new possibilities. A specific drive for the band’s vast artistic output was the question: where to take prog rock next?

Now, 15 years after its original release, InsideOutMusic teamed up with Roine Stolt to not just reissue but rather re-visit the band’s opulent “Unfold The Future” (2002), which has been widely hailed as a classic in its own right. Inspired by the idea of doing this album on vinyl for the first time, Stolt remixed several tracks like the 30 minutes long opener as this monument would not have fit on one LP side in the first place. He explains: “For this re-release I have carefully remixed “The Truth Will Set You Free”, “Devil’s Playground” and “Black & White” - it wasn’t easy to find, or even remember, where all files resided. These remixes (more than one hour worth of music) are, as I see it, more detailed and better balanced - where I found this album to be painfully brutal, overly compressed and rough in the original 2002 mix, at times.” The result is a brilliant, highly diverse stylistic journey that invites you to rediscover a magnificent work by THE FLOWER KINGS in its ultimate edition.

The album takes off nicely with David Longdon's "The Strangest Times", but then gets into immediate free fall and deeply underwater for the next few tracks, quite unexpectedly. Fortunately, it recovers with Nick D'Virgilio's "Apollo" (hey, this guy CAN write good music, although he hides this ability most of the time) and the remaining three tracks, one of which is another Longdon masterpiece. What can I say about Big Big Train that I haven’t said before? This album took a little while to grow on me but by the time I saw it live I was in love with its humongous, over-egged pomposity! They do it all with such passion, excitement and amazing musicianship. Essential. Crinklechips
